mvMap Markers

Mv map works by inserting the following after the summary in a wiki article. (note everything above the mvMap tag will be listed in the mvMap page when the user click on the marker

<mwMap>
location: 42.090619,-76.800714
icon_type: detention
</mwMap>

icon types currently supported are: support, enforcement, detention and raid

To determin the numerical location from an address you can use this address to latitude Longitude finder

Example Work Flow

First we do a google or indybay search in this case we find an indybay article about the raid that happened in Santa Cruz County on September 7th.

We would then visit http://perso.orange.fr/universimmedia/geo/loc.htm and lookup the area in question. Note you can drag the red marker to an arbitrary position if you know the area but not the exact address. In this case we drag the icon to the beach flats and note the Latitude and longitude (36.966215,-122.02124)

We then make a new page by typing in the following url:

http://www.migrawatch.org/wiki/index.php?title=Raid in Santa Cruz County on September 7th 2006

we would then go about making the page by inputing the following:

A raid took place in Santa Cruz County, CA, September 7th, 2006,
107 people where detained.

Source: [http://indybay?article_url Indybay]

<mwMap>
location: 36.966215,-122.02124
icon_type: raid
</mwMap>
[[Category:Raid]]
[[Category:California]]

You would then click preview to see if the page appears as expected. Once you click save the raid icon will show up on the map.

This is just an example obviously the description could be more detailed to include images and more links etc. Also it may be applicable to more categories new categories can be created simply by writing them in as if they existed already. At a minimum we should try and put each map data point in its icon type category & the state it happened in.

Adding info about Markers (icon types)

Our initial data is relatively sparse. A lot of information is publicly available via a few google searches. We have focused the initial data to the following categories. For each of these categories we aim to document the following:

Immigrant Support Centers

Icon type: support

Maps out legal and humanitarian support network for immigrants and their families.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement Facility

Icon type: enforcement

Maps out ICE regional offices.

Facility Known to Detain Immigrants

Icon type: detention

Maps out the prisons being used to detain immigrants

ICE Raid on Immigrant Communities

Icon type: raid

Maps out raids on immigrant communities over the past few years.

Ideas for Future Markers

Contracts

Icon Name: contract Follows the private profit in mass detention and border security.

Representatives

icon name: representative Maps out the representatives that support highly represive immigration policies and detention & boarder expenditures. Should be interesting to see the level of correlation between the location of these politicians and the location of these private detention contracts.
